What to consider when buying a cot or cot bed

Length of usage

If you are looking to save a few quid then you’ll want to invest in something that will grow with your baby.

A cot bed will likely last you longer than a cot but your situation might not warrant a cot bed being used.

Some cot beds can actually last up to a decade or even longer if properly looked after, but will likely set you back more than cheaper cots would.

Size

Whilst you are unlikely to find custom-sized cots and cot beds, there are slightly different sizes you can choose from. On top of this, you’ll find that the exterior dimensions vary greatly.

You’ll need to measure the room and space you’ll want the cot or cot bed to go and then you’ll need to also make sure you measure the interior to get the correct mattress and bedding.

It’s safest for your newborn to sleep in the same room as you for the first 6 months so bare that in mind when making your decision.

What does it come with?

Of course, when you buy a cot bed especially, you’ll need to also buy a mattress to go with it and you’ll want it to be a decent one.

Some cots and cot beds include a mattress with the purchase, others you’ll need to buy separately but you’ll want to make sure that they touch the sides and are secure.

Does it have multiple mattress base positions?

When your baby is little, you don’t want to be lowering them into cots at the bottom position so getting a cot bed or cot that has multiple mattress base positions is important, especially if you have had a cesarian.

Does it meet safety standards?

There are a couple of safety standards when it comes to cot beds and cots and you should make sure your purchase meets those. All of our selections on our list meet the standards.

The gap between the bars should not exceed 6.5cm and should adhere to the latest safety standards – EN716:2008+A1:2013.

Do you need additional features?

You should also ask yourself, do you need any extra features such as a storage drawer, integrated teething rail, or toddler bed guard for once it’s converted.

Should you go for a cot or a cot bed?

A standard cot will typically last your baby until they are around 2 years of age.

You’ll find that they are usually a little smaller than cot beds making them great if don’t have much room for either.

You’ll likely save money buying a cot over the bed version as they are normally cheaper, this is of course due to the slightly more restricted time of use.

If you decide to buy a cot bed, then for the first two years you will be using it as a cot anyway. Once your little one is ready, you can convert it, using by removing the side rails and some off of each end of the cots frame and transitioning it into a toddler bed.

This means you can use a cot bed until they are around 5 years of age, making it better value for money in the long run.

Should you go for a bedside crib or moses basket before you get a cot or cot bed?

Lots of parents opt for a bedside crib or moses basket for their newborn, especially if it’s their firstborn child, for the first 6 months rather than going straight for a cot. They are safety compliant for keeping your baby separate and allow you to get the baby closer to you overnight.

Bedside cribs are particularly handy as they usually feature removable sides which are handy for night feeds and soothing your baby.

How much can you expect to pay for a cot or cot bed?

You can find cots for as little as £40, and if you opt for a travel cot you can get one for even less than that.

But on the other end of the scale, you can easily spend £500 or higher and cot beds on a slightly higher scale starting from around £150 upwards.
