The Best Nappies For Newborns buying guide and FAQ
What are the best nappies for new borns?
The best nappies for a new born will be ones that take into account the delicate skin, absorption rate, and whether they are comfortable.
Which ones are best for a newborns skin?
Finding the best nappy for your newborn’s skin can take some trial and error. A nappy that is good for a friend’s baby might not agree with your baby’s skins.
Be sure to change your baby regularly and keep an eye on their skin especially around their thighs, privates, and bum for rashy or sore patches.
These patches of sore skin could be standard nappy rash, but it could also be a reaction to the nappy itself and it might be worth trying a different brand for a while.
Which ones to buy?
Depending on your little one will point you to which ones to buy. You need to make a decision on if you want to go for disposable or reusable.
If choosing disposable, there are many options available, but you might need to go through a few brands before you find one that’s suitable for your baby.
If going for reusable, there’s are loads of different patterns and designs available and you also have the opportunity to make your own with the right equipment.
Recommended
The new born nappies that we recommend are as follows:
For disposable nappies we recommend the pampers pure, they are made with plant based material, up to 12 hours of dryness and can be purchased in monthly packs making them super-efficient.
For reusable nappy’s we recommend the Alva baby cloth nappies. They come in a pack of 12 but these are enough to last you until they are potty trained. They offer varied designs which is great for versatility and are a great quality.
How to change your Babies Nappy
Changing your new born baby’s nappy can be a daunting task for any new parent but once you know what you are doing, it’s a breeze. It actually becomes harder to do when they get older and start kicking around and not wanting to sit still!
Here is a quick and easy 5 step process on how to change your baby’s nappy.
- Lay your baby down, pull the tabs on either side of their current nappy and remove it. You can roll this up and reseal it. You can then dispose of this into a nappy bin if you have one. If you don’t be sure to use a nappy bag to reduce the odour before placing in the bin.
- You can use some baby wipes from birth but most first-time parents will choose to opt for the midwife recommended cotton wool and warm water. Using your preferred method, gently wipe your baby, paying special attention to the folds of skin and making sure you wipe front to back.
- If your baby looks as though it could be suffering from a little bit of nappy rash, apply a thin layer of your favourite nappy rash cream to the troubled areas. If your baby’s nappy rash doesn’t clear up after a few days be sure to contact your doctor in order to rule out infection or eczema.
- Lift your baby’s bottom half via the ankles and slip a new nappy underneath making sure that the fastening straps at the back. Pull the front part of the nappy in-between the baby’s legs and fasten from the front.
Wash your hands and wipe down the changing mat to ensure no cross-contamination occurs in the future.
Nappies: Reusable vs Disposable
The age-old argument of reusable vs disposable nappies. Disposable nappies where old invented in the 1950’s by a lady called Valerie who used her grandchildren as test subjects.
The majority on this topic does swing in the favour of the disposable, but I think that is partly due to disposable being the method more deemed to be ‘normal’.
But reusables are making a comeback as the world becomes more eco-friendly.
There are lots of myths when it comes to reusable nappies, such as they are difficult to clean or that disposables help your child walk quicker. These are all untrue, and they actually don’t differ much at all from disposable nappies.
Benefits of using reusable nappies
If you are struggling to decide on whether to go with reusable or disposable nappies here are some of the benefits of using reusable nappies.
- Money-Saving Option
- Lots of designs available
- Easy to clean
- Liners are available to protect from stains
Benefits of using disposable nappies
Reusable or disposable, we have listed some of the benefits of using reusable, so here are some of the positives of using disposable nappies.
- No need to clean, wash and dry
- Easy to throw away
- Lots of different brands available
- Different sizes as your baby grows
- Available from all supermarkets
Are Reusable Nappies Worth It?
So, you are thinking of going eco and branching out to the reusable nappy and you are wondering if they are worth it?
Not only can you expect to see a saving in the bank, but you also that you don’t actually see a difference with the washing basket.
The reusable nappies are just as efficient as disposable so you could only be using 4-5 a day as your baby gets older meaning you would even notice them added into your washing.
Teamed with a waterproof liner, you might not even have to change them as regularly as that.
If you are comfortable using them then we think that reusable nappies are very worth it!
Which is Better for Preventing Nappy Rash, Reusable or Disposable?
There’s been a myth regarding nappy rash in cloth nappy users for years, that the wetness causes nappy rash.
If this was the case then all babies that used cloth nappies would have nappy rash.
A study done by the makers of Huggies found that 50% of children will suffer from nappy rash, and you can assume that the makers of Huggies most likely tested those in their disposable nappies.
In fact nothing much can be done about nappy rash, and it’s best to fight it with a cream or gel. We have written a guide for the best nappy rash creams that helps you decide which one you want to go for to help combat the dreaded nappy rash.
